How to Use Natural Laundry Detergent (and Actually Love Wash Day)
· Emily Pepperman
Switching from big-brand detergent to a plant-based one is one of the easiest low-waste swaps you can make — but a few small technique changes make all the difference. Here's how to get the most out of our liquid and powder laundry detergents.
How Much Detergent Should You Use?
Natural detergents are concentrated, so less is more:
- Liquid laundry detergent: 1–2 tablespoons per standard load. Use the higher end for heavily soiled loads or hard water.
- Powder laundry wash: 2 tablespoons per load, added directly to the drum or dispenser.
- Laundry soap bar: rub directly on stains and collars before washing, or grate a tablespoon into your DIY laundry mix.
Both work in standard and HE machines.
Treating Stains
For everyday spots, dab a little liquid detergent (or rub the laundry bar) directly on the stain, let it sit 10–15 minutes, then wash as usual. For dingy whites and stubborn stains, add a scoop of our Oxy Boost Stain Remover to the wash — it uses the brightening power of oxygen instead of chlorine bleach.
Which Scent Should You Try First?
- Lavender — calming and classic; our most popular for sheets and towels.
- Peppermint — crisp and refreshing, like a breath of cool morning air.
- Fresh Linen — the scent of sun-dried sheets, without the clothesline.
- Unscented — hypoallergenic, ideal for sensitive skin and baby clothes.
