How to Make a Bar of Handmade Soap Last Longer

· Emily Pepperman

Handcrafted soap is a different animal from mass-produced bars. It's cured for weeks, rich in skin-loving oils, and — with a little care — a single bar can last 4–6 weeks of daily use. Here are the five habits that make the difference.

1. Let It Dry Between Uses

The number one bar-killer is sitting in a puddle. Use a draining soap dish — wood, self-draining silicone, or anything with slats — so air reaches all sides of the bar. A dry bar is a long-lasting bar.

2. Keep It Out of the Water Stream

Park your soap dish on the far edge of the tub or a shower shelf away from the spray. Constant drips soften the bar even when you're not using it.

3. Use a Soap Saver Bag

A natural sisal soap saver bag builds a rich lather with less rubbing, gently exfoliates, and gives you a way to use every last sliver — just toss the small pieces in the bag and keep going.

4. Rotate Two Bars

Keep two bars going in different spots — one in the shower, one at the sink. Each gets more drying time, and both last longer than a single bar doing double duty.

5. Store Extras the Right Way

Unused bars keep best somewhere cool, dry, and dark — a linen closet is perfect (and it will scent your towels while it waits). Skip the bathroom cabinet, where humidity lives.
